University Park
University Park is the residential grid north of Mockingbird between Hillcrest and Preston, with SMU in its southeast corner and Snider Plaza as its main street. Caruth Boulevard, Lovers Lane, University Boulevard and the Volk Estates streets hold households with three or four cars, usually a current European SUV beside something older that still drives the way it should.
Reaching east Dallas does not involve a highway unless you want one. Mockingbird Lane or Lovers Lane east to Abrams, then Gaston or Garland Road along the lake to Buckner Boulevard, is about 13 minutes with the lights. US-75 south to I-30 east is the alternative when Mockingbird is slow around the campus.
The cars span a wider range of ages than in any other city we cover: a new X5, GLE or Q7 for the daily run beside a well-kept E46 or E39, a W211 or R230 SL, a 997 or a 996, an older XJ or an LR4.
Franchised dealers for these brands sit north on the Tollway and LBJ and west along Lemmon, a longer drive from Caruth than the straight line east to us. An older car needs the right generation of factory software, and a new one with a module fault needs programming rather than a swap.
Surface streets win most of the day. Lovers Lane east crosses US-75 and Greenville, meets Abrams, and from there Gaston or Garland Road runs along the west side of White Rock Lake to Buckner Boulevard. Mockingbird does the same one grid south and is busier around the campus.
When there is a game or an event at SMU, Mockingbird between Hillcrest and Central is the street to avoid, and Lovers Lane or Northwest Highway east to Buckner keeps you clear of it.
The kept cars are the interesting ones. An E46 or E39 with a cluster that lost its pixels and a key that stopped syncing needs the EWS generation of ISTA and the right key hardware, not the newest tool. A W211 or R230 with an ESL fault or a 722.9 that hesitates is XENTRY and SCN coding work.
The new cars are more ordinary: X5 and GLE comfort access faults, Q7 MMI and camera coding, a Range Rover that will not start on a cold morning. Student cars from the campus garages are almost always battery, key and sleep-mode draw problems from sitting a week at a time.
Because the car is right and the owner knows it. We keep the software generations that cover 2000-era BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and Jaguar, and our $165–$265 session reads every module the car has.
Repairs on those cars are written as ranges with what moves them, the parts are OEM or OE-supplier, and the work carries 2 years parts and 2 years labor, up to 24,000 miles, nationwide.
Most are driven down by the household's other car and are back in under half an hour. A rideshare from the shop to Snider Plaza is about fifteen minutes, and a student can take the DART Blue Line from White Rock Station to Mockingbird Station and walk in.
Diagnostic sessions run one to two hours; key programming with a working key is similar. Older-car work and module programming take a day or two and the estimate says which. Send the VIN and a photo of the warning, call or text (817) 765-6604, and we can say whether it is a same-day job.

Spare keys for the campus-garage 3 Series or CLA and for the E46 or W211 that came with one; AVDI handles EWS and older FBS generations, $220–$450 with a working key.

Student cars that sit a week in the SMU garages and die by the weekend: sleep-mode draw traced by circuit, battery with registration $320–$650 when the cell is actually gone.

An ESL or EIS on a W211 kept on Caruth, a CAS on an E90 from Lovers Lane: used or supplied units VIN-matched, flashed and coded in the shop.

722.9 conductor plate work with SCN coding on University Park E-Class and SL, ZF 8HP fluid services on the newer X5 and 5 Series, $320–$3,400 by job.

The older 911 or SL a University Park buyer found at a private sale, inspected with PIWIS or XENTRY and a written report on modules, over-rev counters and service history, $195–$295.

Questions
Yes. ISTA still covers the E46 and E39 with the EWS immobilizer generation, and we keep the older key and adapter hardware those cars need. A session reads the DME, EWS, cluster, airbag and body modules, so the common E46 faults are diagnosed rather than guessed at.
Most often a battery that never recovers between short trips, sometimes with a sleep-mode draw on top. We test the cell, measure the draw by circuit after the modules go to sleep, and register a new battery if it needs one, $320–$650. A stuck comfort module occasionally turns out to be the draw.
Mockingbird or Lovers Lane to Garland Road most of the day, about 13 minutes and no interstate. US-75 to I-30 east is the better choice when SMU has a game or station traffic is heavy, and it is roughly the same time. Saturday hours are Sat: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM, and Saturday mornings around the campus are the quietest.
Yes. SDD covers the X350 and X351 XJ along with the XF and the Land Rovers of the same era, and the common faults, air suspension on the X350, instrument and gateway modules, keys and KVM programming, are familiar work.
